You’ve booked the band, ordered the catering, and sent out the invites. But there’s one key question that stumps even the most seasoned event planner or contractor: How many porta-potties do we actually need?

One Toilet, Ten Guests? Let’s Do the Porta-Pottie Math

At Dalton Jodrey Plumbing & Heating, we get this one a lot. Whether you’re organizing a summer wedding in Mahone Bay, a block party in Liverpool, or setting up a construction site in Bridgewater, the answer depends on several important factors—and we’re here to help you figure it out.

Here’s a quick breakdown to make sure your guests (or crew) are taken care of—no waiting lines, no awkward moments.

For Events: The 1-to-50 Rule

A good general rule is one portable toilet for every 50 people for events lasting up to 4 hours. If your event is longer or includes alcohol (hello, backyard weddings and beer tents!), you’ll want to bump that up.

Here's a quick guide:
  • 1–50 guests = 1 unit

  • 51–100 guests = 2 units

  • 101–150 guests = 3 units

  • Add 1 additional unit per 50 guests after that

And if your event runs over 4 hours? Add 15–25% more units.

For Job Sites: Compliance Matters

If you're running a construction site in Queens or Lunenburg County, the rules are a little different. Nova Scotia Occupational Health & Safety guidelines recommend:

  • 1 toilet per 10 workers

  • Toilets should be located within a reasonable distance from the worksite

At minimum, we recommend a service every two weeks depending on crew size and usage.

We offer durable, no-fuss portable toilets that stand up to heavy use and include handwashing options for hygiene on the job.

Add-Ons That Make a Difference

When in doubt, consider the extras:

  • Units with sinks for more sanitary events or food-focused gatherings

  • Flushing porta-potties for weddings and VIP setups

  • Pink portable toilets to match your event theme or just add personality
