Whether your home runs on a private well or municipal supply, conserving water has never been more important in Nova Scotia. Low rainfall, high forest fire risk, and dry wells are reminders that every drop counts—especially when our plumbing systems and groundwater supply are under stress.

Water saving good news: You can make meaningful changes without turning your daily routine upside down.

Start with the Leaks You Can’t See (or Hear)

A single dripping tap can waste hundreds of litres a month. Leaky toilets are even worse—sometimes wasting thousands. Check for leaks regularly by:

  • Listening for running water when nothing’s on.

  • Lifting the toilet tank lid and looking for ripples or movement in the bowl when it hasn’t been flushed—this often means water is escaping.

Water Saving with Small Shifts in Daily Habits

Water saving doesn’t have to mean rushing through uncomfortable three-minute showers. Small changes in your daily habits can add up to significant savings over time. The goal is to be mindful about when and how you use water so conservation becomes second nature.

Try:

  • Running full loads in the dishwasher and washing machine.

  • Turning off the tap while brushing teeth or scrubbing dishes.

  • Installing low-flow showerheads and faucet aerators.

Spread Out Your Usage

For well owners, staggering high-use tasks helps prevent pump strain and keeps water pressure steady. Avoid doing multiple water-heavy activities—like laundry, showers, and lawn watering—back-to-back.

Track Your Use

If you’re on a well, keep an eye on how often your pump runs. Municipal water customers can monitor their bill for sudden spikes, which may signal leaks or waste.
